Pass with care sign
The no-passing zone has ended. You may pass when it is safe.
MUTCD designation R4-2. See the federal MUTCD, page 7.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
Where would you expect to see this sign?
- A At the start of a section where passing is banned
- B Where a lane ends and traffic must merge left
- C Where a no-passing zone ends, so passing is allowed again
- D Ahead of a curve that has a suggested lower speed
Show answer
C. Where a no-passing zone ends, so passing is allowed again
This sign marks the end of a no-passing zone that began with a DO NOT PASS sign. Passing becomes legal, but you are still responsible for making sure the way is clear. Check for oncoming traffic, hills and side roads before you pull out.
