Slower traffic keep right sign
On multilane roads, drive in the right lane unless you are passing or turning left.
MUTCD designation R4-3. See the federal MUTCD, page 7.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
On a highway with two or more lanes in your direction, what does this sign ask?
- A Trucks must stay in the far left lane
- B The right lane ends ahead, so move left
- C Keep to the right of the island or median ahead
- D Slower drivers should stay in the right lane
Show answer
D. Slower drivers should stay in the right lane
Slow drivers in the left lane force others to weave around them, which causes unnecessary lane changes. This sign tells slower drivers to stay right and leave the left lane for passing. It is a white regulatory sign, so it states a rule rather than a warning.
