Bicycles are not allowed on this road.

MUTCD designation R5-6. See the federal MUTCD, page 147.

How to read signs like this

Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

This sign is posted where a road begins. What does it mean?

    • A A bike lane begins on this road
    • B Watch for bicyclists crossing ahead
    • C Bicycles may not be ridden on this road
    • D Bicyclists must yield to people walking
    Show answer

    C. Bicycles may not be ridden on this road

A red circle and slash over a bicycle means bicycles are excluded from this road. Selective exclusion signs give notice that a state or local law keeps a certain type of traffic off a road, and they must clearly show which type is banned. Other vehicles may still use the road.
