One way sign
Traffic on this road moves only in the direction of the arrow.
MUTCD designation R6-1R.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
You see this sign at a street corner. What does it mean?
- A You must turn right at the next intersection
- B Keep to the right of the island or obstacle in the road ahead
- C Traffic on this street may only go the way the arrow points
- D The road bends sharply to the right just ahead
Show answer
C. Traffic on this street may only go the way the arrow points
This black-and-white rectangle is a regulatory sign showing that traffic on the street may move in one direction only. It is posted at the corners of intersections so drivers entering or crossing the street know which way to turn. Turning against the arrow would put you head-on with traffic.
