No pedestrian crossing sign
Pedestrians may not cross the road here.
MUTCD designation R9-3. See the federal MUTCD, page 148.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This sign faces the sidewalk at a corner. What does it mean?
- A Drivers must yield to people crossing here
- B Watch for people crossing the road just ahead
- C People on foot may not cross the road at this spot
- D Walkers should use the left side of the road, facing traffic
Show answer
C. People on foot may not cross the road at this spot
A red circle and slash over a walking figure bans walking across here. It faces pedestrians and is placed where crossing is undesirable, sometimes with a USE CROSSWALK plaque and an arrow pointing to the crossing. Drivers should still watch for people who cross anyway.
