South Carolina motorcycle rules to know

  • You must be at least 15 years old to get a South Carolina motorcycle beginner's permit, and you must pass the knowledge test and a vision test if one applies. Riders under 18 also need a signed consent form. South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, page 9
  • A South Carolina motorcycle permit lets you ride by yourself from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until 8 p.m. during daylight saving time. At any other time you must be supervised by a motorcycle-licensed rider who is at least 21 with a year of experience, because night riding is harder for a beginner: you see less and other drivers see you less. • At night a South Carolina permit holder must be accompanied by a motorcycle-licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least one year of driving experience. The companion must stay within a safe viewing distance so they can actually watch and help. South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, page 9
  • South Carolina will not renew a motorcycle permit unless you have made a bona fide attempt to pass the skills test. The rule stops riders from staying on a permit indefinitely without ever proving they can handle the bike. South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, page 9
  • After three or more failed skills tests at an SCDMV branch, you must complete an SCDMV-authorized motorcycle safety course and take the test as part of that course. Rider training is otherwise optional in South Carolina. South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, page 9
  • South Carolina's Two Minute Law lets a motorcyclist go through a steady red light only after a full and complete stop of 120 seconds, and only with due care, treating the signal like a stop sign. It exists because light sensors often fail to detect a motorcycle. South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, page 20
