Vermont motorcycle rules to know

  • A Vermont Motorcycle Learner Permit is valid for 120 days from the date of issue. If you are not ready for the skills test by then, you can renew it by mail or in person.

Vermont Motorcycle Manual (VN-008), page 11
  • A Motorcycle Learner Permit may be renewed only twice, so you get the original 120-day permit plus two renewals. If you have not taken the skills test or finished the rider training course by the end of the second renewal, you must wait 12 months before getting another permit.

Vermont Motorcycle Manual (VN-008), page 11
  • If the original permit and two renewals run out before you take the skills test or complete the rider training course, you may not get another Motorcycle Learner Permit for 12 months from the expiration of the last one. After that, you must take the knowledge test again to get a new permit.

Vermont Motorcycle Manual (VN-008), page 11
  • A Vermont Motorcycle Learner Permit allows riding during daylight hours only. Riders are harder to see at night and distances are harder to judge, which is too much risk for someone still learning.

Vermont Motorcycle Manual (VN-008), page 11
  • The Motorcycle Learner Permit holder is not allowed to carry any passengers. The manual explains that a passenger's extra weight changes how the motorcycle behaves, so only experienced riders should carry passengers. Breaking a permit restriction voids the permit.

Vermont Motorcycle Manual (VN-008), page 11
  • The Motorcycle Learner Permit is valid in Vermont only. If you ignore its restrictions, such as riding at night or carrying a passenger, the permit becomes void.
