Class D road test (skills test)

Wisconsin Road Test (2026) What’s on the Driving Test, Scoring & Tips

The Wisconsin road test, also called the skills test or driving test, is a behind-the-wheel test in your own vehicle with a DMV examiner, taken by appointment at a DMV customer service center. A Class D test covers turns, intersections, business and residential driving, lane changes, a Y-turn, a roadside stop and start (hill park), backing and parking; road tests take 20 to 90 minutes depending on the license class. Each skill is worth points and you pass by reaching the required point total, but some dangerous errors fail you regardless of points.

Vehicle requirements

The examiner checks your car before you drive. If it fails, you usually can’t take the test that day.

  • The examiner inspects the vehicle for safety defects and valid registration before the test; know how to use the horn, lights, signals, wipers, defroster, parking brake and other controls
  • No test if: a brake light on either side does not work; a turn signal is missing or broken; the exhaust is defective; the windshield, a front side window or the back window is defective or missing; the driver or passenger door does not work; a required mirror is defective or missing; the speedometer or horn does not work; the brakes are defective
  • No test if the headlamps, tail lamps, wipers or defroster are defective and needed for the conditions, or the tires are defective or excessively worn
  • A permanently attached front seat for the examiner, and working, clean safety belts (vehicles made from 1972)
  • Registered (or registration renewal applied for; expired more than 30 days with no renewal application means no test)
  • You must wear your safety belt and follow safe driving practices
  • Nobody other than DMV staff may ride along, including interpreters

How the Wisconsin road test is scored

Each evaluated skill has a point value; points are awarded for skills done successfully (and for skills not tested), and you pass by reaching the required point total for the class. The passing total is not published. You fail regardless of points for any dangerous-driving error listed under automatic failures. Steps and scoring come from Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Y-turn

Always tested

How it’s scored

The Class D Skills Test Guide (BFS-D15) scores traffic checks, signals, and speed and control: back no more than once and no faster than a slow walk, then pull away smoothly into the proper lane.

Steps

  1. Signal right, check traffic to the right and in your mirrors, pull as far right as possible and stop
  2. Signal left, check your blind spot, turn left to the opposite curb and stop
  3. Look behind you over your right shoulder and reverse just enough to move forward again; stop
  4. Check traffic left and right, then pull forward into your lane

Roadside stop and start (hill park)

Always tested

How it’s scored

Pull to the curb with traffic checks and a signal, stop parallel to and within 1 foot of the curb, set the parking brake and turn the wheels the right way for the hill, then check your blind spot and signal before pulling back into traffic.

Steps

  1. Check traffic to the rear and over your right shoulder, and signal right
  2. Slow down and stop parallel to the curb, within 1 foot of it
  3. Set the parking brake; uphill with a curb turn the wheels fully left, uphill without a curb or downhill turn them fully right
  4. Check the blind spot over your left shoulder, signal left, and pull back into the proper lane

Backing

Always tested

How it’s scored

Back in a straight path no faster than a slow walk, looking back over your right shoulder, then check traffic before moving forward.

Steps

  1. Turn your body and look back over your right shoulder through the rear window; do not rely only on mirrors or a backup camera
  2. Back slowly, no faster than a slow walk, in a straight path
  3. When done, scan left and right before moving back into traffic

Parking (at the DMV service center) and parking-lot driving

Always tested

How it’s scored

Parking skills are graded when you park at the DMV service center: scan the sidewalk and behind the vehicle, look back over your right shoulder when backing, and end up legally parked. In the lot, drive slowly, yield to pedestrians, and check for vehicles and pedestrians.

Parallel parking

May be tested

How it’s scored

Not listed by name as a required Class D maneuver; the rule requires 'parking skills' and the 2016 road-test terms sheet lists 'Parallel park the vehicle' as an instruction the examiner may use. The handbook gives these steps.

Steps

  1. Find a space about 3-6 feet longer than your car; signal
  2. Stop even with the car ahead of the space, about 2 feet away
  3. Turn the wheel all the way toward the curb and back slowly
  4. When your front door passes the other car's back bumper, straighten the wheel and keep backing slowly
  5. When your bumper clears the car in front, turn the wheel sharply the other way and back until parallel with the curb
  6. Straighten the wheels; end about a foot from the curb and at least 2 feet from the cars in front and behind
SourcesOfficial source 4wisconsindot.gov“Find a parking space that is about 3-6 feet longer than your vehicle. Below are steps on how to parallel park: 1. Put your turn signal on. If you fail the Wisconsin road test

You get your results and a skills test guide. The waiting period depends on how you failed: by rule, at least 1 day; at least one week if you failed by 10 points or less or for a crash, dangerous act or inattention; at least 2 weeks if you failed by more than 10 points or for an inordinate lack of skill (the waiting period includes the test day). DMV's web pages say 1-14 days, and the scheduling page says the system requires a full 7 days. After 5 failed tests in a year you need DMV permission to test again. Waivers and third-party testing

Class D road tests are given by DMV examiners; the rule says all skills tests are given by the department except CDL third-party tests. State law lets DMV contract with third-party testers (including some law enforcement agencies) for Class D tests and make reciprocity agreements with some foreign countries that waive the road test for their licensed drivers, but DMV publishes no Class D third-party testing program for teens. Driver education does not waive the road test. Official source 2docs.legis.wisconsin.gov“Department conducted examinations. Wisconsin road test questions

What is on the Wisconsin road test?

The Wisconsin road test, also called the skills test or driving test, is a behind-the-wheel test in your own vehicle with a DMV examiner, taken by appointment at a DMV customer service center. A Class D test covers turns, intersections, business and residential driving, lane changes, a Y-turn, a roadside stop and start (hill park), backing and parking; road tests take 20 to 90 minutes depending on the license class. Each skill is worth points and you pass by reaching the required point total, but some dangerous errors fail you regardless of points. Maneuvers covered by official sources: Y-turn, Roadside stop and start (hill park), Backing, Parking (at the DMV service center) and parking-lot driving, Parallel parking, Right turns, Left turns, Intersections (stopped and driving through), Lane changes, Quick stop.

How is the Wisconsin driving test scored?

Each evaluated skill has a point value; points are awarded for skills done successfully (and for skills not tested), and you pass by reaching the required point total for the class. The passing total is not published. You fail regardless of points for any dangerous-driving error listed under automatic failures. Examiners score on form MV3544 ('Class D' Skills Test), and you get a copy as your test report.

What is an automatic fail on the Wisconsin road test?

Official Wisconsin sources list these as automatic failures: A preventable crash, or hitting a fixed object or pedestrian (minor bumper contact while parking excepted); A dangerous act that makes another person take evasive action or makes the examiner warn you to prevent a crash; Any moving traffic violation (for example disobeying a sign or signal, speeding, one turn from the wrong lane or two turns into the wrong lane); Not driving attentively; Not looking and slowing down at an uncontrolled intersection; and An inordinate lack of ability, knowledge or skill in vehicle control, coping with the driving task or conditions, or safe driving practices.

What do I need to bring to the Wisconsin road test?

Valid instruction permit (keep it after the test so you can keep practicing); A person with a regular, valid driver license to come with you when you check in; Under 18: Wisconsin Driver License Application MV3001 with the sponsorship section completed; A registered vehicle for the license class you are testing for; and Road test appointment (scheduled online at wisconsindmv.gov/roadtest).

What are the vehicle requirements for the Wisconsin road test?

The examiner inspects the vehicle for safety defects and valid registration before the test; know how to use the horn, lights, signals, wipers, defroster, parking brake and other controls; No test if: a brake light on either side does not work; a turn signal is missing or broken; the exhaust is defective; the windshield, a front side window or the back window is defective or missing; the driver or passenger door does not work; a required mirror is defective or missing; the speedometer or horn does not work; the brakes are defective; No test if the headlamps, tail lamps, wipers or defroster are defective and needed for the conditions, or the tires are defective or excessively worn; A permanently attached front seat for the examiner, and working, clean safety belts (vehicles made from 1972); Registered (or registration renewal applied for; expired more than 30 days with no renewal application means no test); You must wear your safety belt and follow safe driving practices; and Nobody other than DMV staff may ride along, including interpreters.

When can I take the Wisconsin road test?

You must hold a valid instruction permit that is more than 7 days old (one test is allowed on a permit expired less than a year). If under 18, you must have held the permit at least six months, have no violations in the past six months, have at least 50 hours of practice (10 at night) certified by your sponsor, and have a driver education completion (classroom and behind-the-wheel) submitted electronically to DMV by your school. The first license is a probationary license, at age 16 or older.

What happens if I fail the Wisconsin road test?

You get your results and a skills test guide. The waiting period depends on how you failed: by rule, at least 1 day; at least one week if you failed by 10 points or less or for a crash, dangerous act or inattention; at least 2 weeks if you failed by more than 10 points or for an inordinate lack of skill (the waiting period includes the test day). DMV's web pages say 1-14 days, and the scheduling page says the system requires a full 7 days. After 5 failed tests in a year you need DMV permission to test again. Each road test appointment costs $15, pass or fail, including no-shows and appointments not canceled 24 hours ahead. DMV may shorten a waiting period once for undue hardship.

Can the Wisconsin road test be waived?

Class D road tests are given by DMV examiners; the rule says all skills tests are given by the department except CDL third-party tests. State law lets DMV contract with third-party testers (including some law enforcement agencies) for Class D tests and make reciprocity agreements with some foreign countries that waive the road test for their licensed drivers, but DMV publishes no Class D third-party testing program for teens. Driver education does not waive the road test.

Notes from our check

Wisconsin's examiner score sheet is form MV3544 ('Class D' Skills Test), named in the Trans 104.06 note; it is not posted online, and applicants get a copy as their result. The published Class D Skills Test Guide (BFS-D15, 7/2025, https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf) mirrors the score sheet's categories and its Disqualifications list, but it is an image-only PDF with no text layer, so both pages were rendered to images and read on 2026-10-04; those citations carry a transcribed 'note' with the page number (verified_by: image) instead of a machine-checkable quote. The point value of each item and the passing point total are not published. Retest waiting periods conflict: Trans 104.09 sets 1 day, 1 week or 2 weeks depending on the result; the road test information page says 1-14 days; the scheduling page says a full 7 days. Parallel parking is not named as a required Class D maneuver in Trans 104.06(9) or BFS-D15 (parking skills are graded while parking at the DMV service center), but it appears among the instructions on the 2016 BDS318 road test terms sheet. The rule's GDL practice requirement (Trans 104.055, 30 hours) is older than the current 50-hour requirement on DMV's pages and in the handbook; the 50-hour figure is used here.
