Wisconsin motorcycle rules to know

  • A Wisconsin Cycle Instruction Permit (CYCI) is valid for 6 months. If you have already held three CYCIs, you must complete, or be enrolled in, a basic rider course before you can get a fourth.

    Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, page 8
  • You must be at least 16 to get a cycle instruction permit in Wisconsin. Riders under 18 also need a parent or guardian sponsor, proof of driver education and proof of enrollment in a basic rider course.

    Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, page 8
  • Applicants under 18 must enroll in (and pay for) a basic rider course and bring the provider's proof of enrollment to the DMV. The only exemptions are for applicants who live more than 50 road miles from a course site or already hold a valid motorcycle license from another jurisdiction.

    Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, page 8
  • After three CYCIs, Wisconsin requires you to successfully complete, or be enrolled in, a basic rider course before getting a fourth. The only exception is for people who live more than 50 road miles from a course site. The rule stops riders from staying on a permit for years without proper training.

    Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, page 8
  • A Wisconsin permit holder may ride after dark only when accompanied by a licensed person who is at least 25, has at least two years of licensed driving experience and holds a Class M license. That person does not have to ride as your passenger, but must be nearby.

    Wisconsin Motorcyclists' Handbook, page 9
  • Wisconsin requires approved helmets (U.S. DOT standard at minimum) for operators and passengers under 18 and for anyone riding on a cycle instruction permit, whatever their age. The chin strap must be fastened. Helmets are highly recommended for everyone else because they reduce head and neck injuries.
