Sample questions

  1. Under normal conditions, what is the minimum following distance you should keep behind another vehicle?

    • A One second
    • B One motorcycle length for every 10 mph
    • C Half a second, since motorcycles stop faster
    • D Two seconds
    Show answer

    D. Two seconds

Keep at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead: when its rear passes a fixed marker, count 'one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two' before you reach it. Motorcycles need as much distance to stop as cars, and the gap also gives you a better view of potholes.

    • D While you roll forward slowly in first gear
    Show answer

    B. After you start the engine and put the transmission in neutral

Tell your passenger to get on only after you have started the engine and put the transmission in neutral. As they mount, keep both feet on the ground and the front brake applied so the motorcycle stays steady.

  3. If you have seven drinks over three hours, about how many drinks' worth of alcohol will still be in your system at the end of the three hours?

    • A None, if you also ate food
    • B About one
    • C At least four
    • D Exactly three
    Show answer

    C. At least four

Your body eliminates alcohol at a rate of almost one drink per hour, so seven drinks over three hours leaves at least four in your system. You would need at least another four hours before even considering riding.
