  1. What colors and shape do most warning signs have?

    • A Yellow with black symbols, usually diamond-shaped
    • B Red with white letters, usually octagon-shaped
    • C White with black letters, usually rectangular
    • D Green with white letters, usually rectangular
    Show answer

    A. Yellow with black symbols, usually diamond-shaped

Warning signs are yellow with black lettering or symbols, and most are diamond-shaped. They tell you to slow down and be ready to stop for a hazard or special situation ahead, such as a merge or a school crossing.

  2. A vehicle ahead shows a reflective orange triangle with a red border. What does this tell you?

    • A It is carrying hazardous materials
    • B It moves slower than normal traffic
    • C It is an emergency vehicle on a call
    • D It is about to stop at a railroad crossing
    Show answer

    B. It moves slower than normal traffic

The orange triangle bordered in red is the slow-moving vehicle emblem. Farm tractors, animal-drawn vehicles and maintenance vehicles that usually travel 25 mph or less display it, so slow down early when you see it.

  3. Road sign for this question

What does this white regulatory sign mean?

    • A A U-turn lane begins ahead
    • B U-turns are not allowed here
    • C U-turns are allowed only when yielding
    • D The road ahead curves sharply back
    Show answer

    B. U-turns are not allowed here

A red circle with a red slash over a symbol on a white regulatory sign means that maneuver is prohibited. Here the symbol is a U-turn arrow, so you may not make a U-turn.

  4. Road sign for this question

You approach an intersection and this sign faces you. What must you do?

    • A Slow down and stop only if cross traffic is close
    • B Stop only when a pedestrian is waiting at the corner
    • C Get ready, because you will need to stop farther ahead
    • D Come to a full stop, then go only when the way is clear
    Show answer

    D. Come to a full stop, then go only when the way is clear

The red octagon is used for one sign only, and it means a full stop is always required. After stopping, yield to cross traffic and pedestrians and go only when it is safe. Because no other sign shares this shape, you can recognize it even when you cannot read the word.
