Sample questions

  1. Which restriction applies to a California Class M1/M2 motorcycle instruction permit?

    • A You may carry one passenger who is 21 or older
    • B You may carry a passenger only in daylight
    • C You may carry a passenger who holds a Class M1
    • D You may not carry any passengers
    Show answer

    D. You may not carry any passengers

The California motorcycle instruction permit comes with three restrictions, and one is that you may not carry passengers. A passenger changes how the motorcycle balances, brakes and speeds up, which is too much for a rider who is still learning.

  2. Under normal conditions, what following distance does the California Motorcycle Handbook recommend?

    • A At least one second
    • B At least two seconds
    • C At least four seconds
    • D One motorcycle length per 10 mph
    Show answer

    B. At least two seconds

Normally keep a two-second following distance, counted from when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed marker. It gives you a minimum amount of space to stop or swerve and a better view of potholes and hazards.

  3. When checking the throttle before you ride, what should it do when you let go?

    • A Stay where you left it
    • B Snap back to the closed position
    • C Slowly drift back over a few seconds
    • D Rev the engine briefly
    Show answer

    B. Snap back to the closed position

Before starting out, make sure the clutch and throttle work smoothly. The throttle should snap back when released and the clutch should feel tight and smooth. A sticking throttle is a serious hazard you want to find in the driveway, not in traffic.

  4. In California, it is illegal for a rider under 21 to ride with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of:

    • A 0.01% or higher
    • B 0.05% or higher
    • C 0.08% or higher
    • D 0.04% or higher
    Show answer

    A. 0.01% or higher

California has zero tolerance for riders under 21: a BAC of 0.01% or above is illegal. For riders 21 and older the limit is 0.08%. A breath or blood test decides, not how sober you look or act.
