Colorado motorcycle rules to know

  • In Colorado the general "M" endorsement covers both 2-wheel and 3-wheel motorcycles. A separate "3" endorsement exists for riders who only want to (or only tested on) 3-wheel machines. Remember: M = motorcycles of either kind, 3 = three wheels only.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336), page 5
  • The skill test you pass decides which endorsement you get. If you pass on a three-wheel motorcycle, the "3" endorsement appears, which allows 3-wheel motorcycles only. To ride a 2-wheel motorcycle you would need the general M endorsement.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336), page 5
  • Colorado treats a two-wheeler with an engine of 50cc or less (or an electric one of 4476 watts or less with a 40 mph maximum) as a low-power scooter, not a motorcycle. You still need at least a basic driver's license to ride one on public streets.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336), page 5
  • You must be at least 16 to add a general or 3-wheel motorcycle endorsement in Colorado. You also must pass the record review, physical aptitude review, vision test, written test and skills test, and pay the fees.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336), page 5
  • Riders under 18 must hold the motorcycle instruction permit for 12 months and be at least 16 before the endorsement is added. The long holding period gives young riders a full year of supervised practice in every season.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336), page 5
  • Colorado riders between 15 and 16 must complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) program and show proof of completion before they can receive an instruction permit. Starting young requires formal training first.
