You are stopped at a steady red light. There is no sign forbidding it. What may you do?
- A Turn right once the way is clear
- B Go straight if no cross traffic is coming
- C Turn right without stopping if it is clear
- D Turn left onto any two-way street
Show answer
A. Turn right once the way is clear
After a complete stop at a red light, you may turn right unless a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted, as long as the way is clear. You must still yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to other traffic.

What does a flashing yellow arrow for your turn mean?
- A Oncoming traffic is stopped, so your turn is protected
- B You may turn, but must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
- C You must stop and wait for a solid green arrow
- D The arrow is about to turn red, so clear quickly
Show answer
B. You may turn, but must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
A flashing yellow arrow allows turns in the arrow's direction, but oncoming traffic has a green light. Yield to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians before turning.

You reach an intersection where the traffic lights are out and no officer is directing traffic. What should you do?
- A Slow down and go through as if it were flashing yellow
- B Let the busier road go first, then follow it
- C Treat it as a four-way stop
- D Keep going if you were on the main road
Show answer
C. Treat it as a four-way stop
When signals are out and no officer is present, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Vehicles go in the order they arrived, and drivers arriving together yield to the driver on the right.
