Illinois motorcycle rules to know
- Illinois has two motorcycle classifications. Class L is limited to motor-driven cycles under 150cc, while Class M covers any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle. Remember L for 'little' engines. Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 4
- If you are under 18, Illinois issues a 24-month Class M instruction permit only after you finish an approved driver education course and an IDOT Motorcycle Rider Education Course. The rider course gives young riders formal skills training before they ride in traffic. Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 4
- An Illinois motorcycle instruction permit allows riding only in daylight and only under the direct supervision of a qualified licensed rider. Darkness makes a new rider harder to see and makes hazards harder to spot, so the permit keeps learners in the safest conditions. Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 4
- Your supervisor must be a licensed motorcycle operator who is at least 21 and has at least one year of driving experience. A seasoned rider can spot mistakes and coach you before they turn into crashes. Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 4
- Applicants age 18 or older can get a 12-month instruction permit for a Class L or Class M motorcycle. Younger applicants get a longer 24-month permit, but only after completing driver education. Illinois Secretary of State, Driver Services Department website
- Riders 16 and older with a valid Illinois license who complete an IDOT-approved motorcycle course skip the Secretary of State skill test, because they already passed a skills test at the end of the course. They must show the course completion card along with proper identification. Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 40
