Michigan motorcycle rules to know

  • Michigan law says that before anyone operates a motorcycle (other than an autocycle) on a public street or highway, they must have a motorcycle endorsement, the CY, on their operator's or chauffeur's license. The endorsement shows you have proven the extra knowledge and skill a motorcycle demands.

Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual (SOS-116), page 17
  • A first offense of riding without a motorcycle endorsement is a civil infraction with a fine of not more than $250. A later violation becomes a misdemeanor with up to 1 year in jail, a $500 fine, or both, and the motorcycle can also be towed and impounded.

Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual (SOS-116), page 17
  • A Michigan motorcycle TIP is valid for 180 days and is required before you take the rider skills test. It is meant as a short practice period under supervision, not a long-term way to ride.

Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual (SOS-116), page 9
  • Only two TIPs are issued in a 10-year period. If the second one runs out before you pass the rider skills test, Michigan requires you to complete an approved rider education course to earn the endorsement, which ensures you get structured training.

Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual (SOS-116), page 9
  • A TIP holder must ride under the constant visual supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator who is at least 18. An experienced rider who can see you can spot mistakes and coach you before they become habits.

Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual (SOS-116), page 9
  • A Michigan motorcycle TIP lets you ride only during the day; nighttime riding is not permitted. Darkness makes it harder for a new rider to see hazards and for drivers to see a motorcycle.
