    • A Never; left turns on red are illegal in Michigan
    • B From any street onto any other street, as long as you first make a full stop
    • C Only from a one-way street onto a two-way street
    • D From a one-way or two-way street onto a one-way street, after a full stop

    D. From a one-way or two-way street onto a one-way street, after a full stop

Michigan allows a left turn on red onto a one-way street, from either a one-way or a two-way street, after a complete stop. Check for traffic from the right and yield to vehicles and pedestrians first.

  2. At an intersection with a "Michigan Left," how do you turn left from the main highway?

    • A Drive straight through, use the median crossover to U-turn, then turn right
    • B Turn left directly from the left lane at the intersection
    • C Turn left from the right lane after a full stop
    • D Use the center turn lane to turn left at the light

    A. Drive straight through, use the median crossover to U-turn, then turn right

Michigan Lefts are indirect left turns. You drive past the intersection, turn left into the median crossover to make a U-turn, then come back and turn right onto the cross street.

  3. A median crossover for a Michigan Left looks wide enough for two cars side by side, but it has no lane markings. How should you treat it?

    • A As a two-lane crossover, side by side
    • B As a parking area while you wait for traffic
    • C As a lane for large trucks only
    • D As a single-lane crossover, one vehicle at a time
    Show answer

    D. As a single-lane crossover, one vehicle at a time

An unmarked median crossover is always a single-lane crossover. The extra width is there for trucks and RVs that need a wider turn, not for two cars at once.

  4. An intersection has two left-turn lanes side by side, and you are in the right-hand one. Which lane should you enter on the new street?

    • A The lane that matches the turn lane you started in
    • B Any open lane on the new street
    • C The lane closest to the center line, to finish the turn quickly
    • D Any lane you like, as long as you signal during the turn
    Show answer

    A. The lane that matches the turn lane you started in

When there are multiple turn lanes, complete your turn into the lane that matches the one you turned from. Staying in your lane keeps you from cutting off the car turning beside you.
