Oklahoma motorcycle rules to know

  • Service Oklahoma states that any motorcycle driver or rider under 18 must wear DOT-approved head protection. Adults are not required to by law, but the manual is clear that a quality helmet is the best protection any rider can wear.

  • Oklahoma law requires every motorcycle to have a windshield, or its operator must wear ANSI-approved goggles or a face shield. Unlike the helmet rule, this one has no age limit. For your safety, the manual still recommends a faceshield or goggles over relying on a windshield.

  • Oklahoma has zero tolerance for drivers and riders under 21: any measurable amount of alcohol is illegal, and the license is revoked even without a DUI conviction in court. The MSF manual notes that under-21 limits differ between states, so learn Oklahoma's rule rather than a national one.

  • For 14- and 15-year-olds, the application must be signed by a custodial parent or legal guardian. That adult agrees the license conditions will be followed and accepts financial and legal responsibility if the teen breaks the law, damages property or injures someone while riding.

    Oklahoma Driver Manual, page 7
  • Oklahoma issues motorcycle learner permits from age 14. You must also pass the Class D written test, and applicants under 18 must complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Permit holders under 16 face extra limits on riding hours, supervision, helmet use and engine size.

  • In Oklahoma you must hold a motorcycle learner permit for 30 days before you are eligible for a full motorcycle endorsement. Use that time to practice in low-risk areas and build skill before riding in heavy traffic.
