Sample emergencies & crashes questions
Your car starts to skid on an icy road and the rear slides to the right. What should you do?
- A Steer hard to the left
- B Speed up to regain traction
- C Steer to the right, in the direction the rear is skidding
- D Brake firmly until the car stops
Show answer
C. Steer to the right, in the direction the rear is skidding
If your vehicle skids, look and steer in the direction you want to go: if the rear slides right, steer right. Do not brake, and be ready to correct a smaller second skid the same way.
Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS) and you must stop fast. How should you brake?
- A Pump the brake pedal quickly
- B Pull the parking brake
- C Press firmly and hold steady pressure
- D Brake lightly and steer hard
Show answer
C. Press firmly and hold steady pressure
With ABS, keep firm, continuous pressure on the brake and do not pump. You may feel pulsing and hear noise, which is normal. Without ABS, press and release the brakes repeatedly.
A front tire blows out at highway speed. What should you do first?
- A Hold the wheel tightly and stay off the brake
- B Speed up to keep the car stable
- C Brake hard right away
- D Steer sharply toward the shoulder
Show answer
A. Hold the wheel tightly and stay off the brake
After a blowout, hold the steering wheel tightly, stay off the brake and slowly take your foot off the gas. Steer smoothly to a safe spot, and brake gently only after you have slowed.
Your gas pedal sticks and the car keeps speeding up. Tapping the pedal does not free it. What should you do next?
- A Shift to neutral and use the brakes
- B Turn the ignition to LOCK
- C Pump the gas pedal hard
- D Reach down to free the pedal with your hand
Show answer
A. Shift to neutral and use the brakes
If the accelerator sticks, keep your eyes on the road. Shift to neutral and brake, which takes power off the wheels, then steer off the road when you have slowed. Never turn the key to LOCK, which can lock the steering.
