You hold a beginner's permit and want to practice at 3 p.m. Who must be with you?

Show answer
C. A licensed driver age 21 or older with one year of experience, in the front seat
From 6 a.m. to midnight, a permit holder may drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience and sits in the front seat. Sitting up front lets the supervisor coach you and react quickly.
Can a South Carolina beginner's permit holder drive between midnight and 6 a.m.?
- A Yes, but only with a licensed parent, guardian or other adult the law lists
- B Yes, alone, as long as the trip is to or from a job or school event
- C Yes, with any licensed passenger who is 18 or older riding in the front passenger seat
- D No, permit holders may never drive at any time between midnight and 6 a.m.
Show answer
A. Yes, but only with a licensed parent, guardian or other adult the law lists
A permit holder may drive after midnight, but a licensed person listed in SC Code §56-1-100(A), such as a parent, legal guardian or another qualified adult, must supervise. Night driving is riskier, so the law limits who can supervise it.
You are 16. How long must you hold your beginner's permit before you can apply for a driver's license?
- A At least 90 days
- B At least one year
- C At least 30 days

Show answer
D. At least 180 days
