Utah motorcycle rules to know

  • A Utah motorcycle learner permit is an add-on for people who already drive: you must be at least 16, already hold a valid Class D or commercial license, and pass the vision test and the motorcycle written test. Building on an existing license means you already know the rules of the road before learning to ride. Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 8
  • A Utah motorcycle learner permit is valid for six months. That gives you time to practice and take the skills test; if it runs out, you have to apply again. Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 8
  • For the first two months, a Utah motorcycle permit holder may not ride on a highway with a posted speed limit of more than 60 mph (Utah Code 53-3-210.6). The motorcycle manual says '60 miles per hour or more', but the statute says 'more than 60', so a road posted at exactly 60 mph is allowed. Utah Department of Public Safety, Driver License Division website
  • For their first two months, Utah motorcycle permit holders may not ride from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Riding at night is harder for everyone: you see less, others see you less, and more impaired drivers are on the road. Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 9
  • Carrying a passenger is one of three activities banned for the first two months on a Utah motorcycle permit. A passenger changes how the bike balances, brakes and turns, so new riders first learn to handle the motorcycle alone. After two months the restriction ends. Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 9
  • Anyone younger than 19 must hold the Utah motorcycle learner permit for two months, but the requirement can be waived with proof of completing the Basic Rider Course. The BRC teaches braking, swerving and cornering on a closed range, so it stands in for the time spent practicing on the street. Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 9
