What must you have before Utah will issue you a motorcycle learner permit?
- A Be 16 or older, hold a Class D or commercial license, and pass vision and written tests
- B Be at least 15 and pass only the motorcycle written test, with no other license needed
- C Be at least 16 and complete the Basic Rider Course before taking any written test
- D Be at least 18, hold a Class D license, and pass the motorcycle skills test before applying
Show answer
A. Be 16 or older, hold a Class D or commercial license, and pass vision and written tests
A Utah motorcycle learner permit is an add-on for people who already drive: you must be at least 16, already hold a valid Class D or commercial license, and pass the vision test and the motorcycle written test. Building on an existing license means you already know the rules of the road before learning to ride.
On a dry, straight road you need to stop in the shortest possible distance. What is maximum straight-line braking?
- A Locking both wheels so the tires skid to a stop
- B Applying the front brake fully and leaving the rear brake off
- C Fully applying both brakes without locking either wheel
- D Squeezing the clutch and using only the rear brake
Show answer
C. Fully applying both brakes without locking either wheel
Maximum straight-line braking means fully applying the front and rear brakes without locking either wheel. Keep your body centered and look well ahead, not down, so the motorcycle stays straight and the tires keep their grip.
You hold a full Utah motorcycle endorsement. Under Utah law, when may you carry a passenger?
- A Any time, as long as the passenger sits on the gas tank
- B Any time the passenger is able to hold on to your waist securely
- C Only if it is designed for two and has passenger footrests
- D Only if the passenger is 16 or older
Show answer
C. Only if it is designed for two and has passenger footrests
Utah law forbids carrying a passenger unless the motorcycle is designed for more than one person. The passenger must sit on a permanent seat built for two or a firmly attached approved seat, and the motorcycle must have passenger footrests. Without these, the passenger can't stay balanced and may affect your control.
In Utah, an adult rider is considered intoxicated at what blood alcohol concentration (BAC)?
- A 0.02% or above
- B 0.05% or above
- C 0.10% or above
- D 0.08% or above
Show answer
B. 0.05% or above
The manual notes that adults are generally considered intoxicated at a BAC of 0.08%, but Utah's threshold is lower: 0.05%. Even below the limit, judgment and riding skills are impaired, so the safest choice is not to drink before riding.
