Virginia DMV Exam Simulator

A full-length mock exam built to Virginia's real rules: 10 road-sign questions (all 10 must be correct), then 30 general-knowledge questions (24 to pass). New questions every attempt.

How this simulator works

  • Part 1: Road signs: 10 questions, 10 correct to pass this part.
  • Part 2: General knowledge: 30 questions, 24 correct to pass this part.
  • No time limit, like the real test. Take your time.
  • You won’t see whether you were right until the end, just like at the Virginia test. Then you can review every answer with its explanation.
  • Questions are drawn fresh from the full Virginia bank each time.

How the real Virginia knowledge test works

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles test is 10 road-sign questions (all 10 must be correct), then 30 general-knowledge questions (24 to pass). You must pass each part on its own; a strong score on one part does not make up for the other. This simulator follows the same structure, gives no feedback until you finish, and draws a new set of questions from the full Virginia bank every time.

Aim to pass the simulator two or three times in a row, on different days, before you book your test.

Sample questions from this test

  1. Part one of Virginia's knowledge exam has 10 road-sign questions. How many must you answer correctly before you can move on to part two?

    • A At least 9 of them
    • B At least 8 of them
    • C At least 7 of them
    • D All 10 of them
    Show answer

    D. All 10 of them

Virginia's sign section is all-or-nothing: you must get every one of the 10 sign questions right before the computer lets you start part two. Signs are tested this strictly because you have to recognise them instantly on the road.

  2. An adult driver collects 18 demerit points within 12 months. What will Virginia DMV do?

    • A A 90-day suspension plus a driver improvement clinic
    • B Suspend the license for 30 days with no clinic
    • C Send a warning letter but take no other action at all
    • D Revoke the license for one year with no clinic
    Show answer

    A. A 90-day suspension plus a driver improvement clinic

If you receive 18 demerit points within 12 months, or 24 within 24 months, DMV suspends your driving privilege for 90 days and requires a driver improvement clinic. Points add up from convictions, so a string of small violations can cost you your license.

  3. For a driver aged 21 or older, at what blood alcohol content (BAC) does Virginia law consider you to be driving under the influence?

    • A .02 percent or higher
    • B .05 percent or higher
    • C .08 percent or higher
    • D .10 percent or higher
    Show answer

    C. .08 percent or higher

Drivers 21 and older are legally under the influence at a BAC of .08 percent or higher. You can still be convicted below .08 if your driving is impaired.

    • A 20 MPH
    • B 25 MPH
    • C 30 MPH
    • D 35 MPH
    Show answer

Virginia's default limit is 25 MPH in school, business and residential areas, 35 MPH on unpaved roads and 55 MPH on all other roads. These apply whenever no speed limit sign says otherwise.

Turning right at a red light with a pedestrian in the crosswalkYou

You are at a steady red light with no signs prohibiting turns. You want to turn right. What must you do?

    • A Wait for the light to turn green before turning
    • B Stop fully, then turn when clear, yielding to pedestrians and traffic
    • C Stop, then turn only if a green arrow appears
    • D Slow down and turn without a full stop if no pedestrians or cars are coming
    Show answer

    B. Stop fully, then turn when clear, yielding to pedestrians and traffic

Virginia allows a right turn on a steady red after a complete stop. Look both ways, yield to pedestrians and other traffic, and watch for motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds. It is not allowed where a No Turn on Red sign or a red right arrow is shown.
