  • Questions are drawn fresh from the full Virginia bank each time.

Sample questions

  1. During which hours may you ride with a Virginia motorcycle learner's permit?

    • A After 4 a.m. and before midnight
    • B After 5 a.m. and before 11 p.m.
    • C Only between sunrise and sunset
    • D At any hour, as long as you are supervised
    Show answer

    A. After 4 a.m. and before midnight

  2. Why should you use the front brake every time you slow or stop?

    • A It wears out the rear tire more slowly
    • B It keeps the brake light from coming on too early
    • C It provides about three-quarters of the stopping power
    • D It is less likely to skid than the rear brake on any surface
    Show answer

    C. It provides about three-quarters of the stopping power

The front brake is the more powerful brake: it supplies about three-quarters of a motorcycle's total stopping power. If you use only the rear brake for normal stops, you may not build the habit and skill to use the front brake when you really need to stop quickly.

  3. Under normal conditions, what is the minimum following distance the manual recommends behind the vehicle ahead?

    • A 3 seconds
    • B 2 seconds
    • C 1 second
    • D 5 seconds
    Show answer

    A. 3 seconds

Keep at least a three-second following distance: count seconds from when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed marker until you reach it. That gives you time to stop or swerve and a better view of potholes ahead.

  4. When is wet pavement especially slippery for a motorcycle?

    • A After it has rained steadily for an hour
    • B Only on gravel roads
    • C Only when the temperature is below freezing
    • D Just after it starts to rain, before oil washes off
    Show answer

    D. Just after it starts to rain, before oil washes off

Wet pavement is most slippery just after it starts to rain, before surface oil washes to the side of the road. Lane markings, steel plates and manhole covers are also slick when wet.
