Wisconsin Motorcycle Permit Exam Simulator

A full-length mock motorcycle knowledge test: Wisconsin does not publish the count or pass mark; we use 30 questions at 80%. New questions every attempt.

How this simulator works

  • Knowledge test: 30 questions, 24 correct to pass.
  • No time limit, like the real test. Take your time.
  • You won’t see whether you were right until the end, just like at the Wisconsin test. Then you can review every answer with its explanation.
  • Questions are drawn fresh from the full Wisconsin bank each time.

Sample questions

  1. How long is a Wisconsin Cycle Instruction Permit (CYCI) valid?

    • A 6 months
    • B 12 months
    • C 18 months
    • D 90 days
    Show answer

    A. 6 months

A Wisconsin Cycle Instruction Permit (CYCI) is valid for 6 months. If you have already held three CYCIs, you must complete, or be enrolled in, a basic rider course before you can get a fourth.

  2. How much alcohol may a Wisconsin rider under age 21 have in their body while riding?

    • A Less than 0.02 percent
    • B Less than 0.08 percent
    • C One drink per hour of riding
    • D None at all
    Show answer

    D. None at all

Wisconsin's Absolute Sobriety ("Not A Drop") law means riders under 21 can be arrested for riding with any amount of alcohol in their body. Even small amounts slow reaction time and judgment, which matter even more on two wheels.

  3. What is the minimum following distance this handbook recommends behind another vehicle in ideal conditions?

    • A Four seconds
    • B Two seconds
    • C Three seconds
    • D One car length per 10 mph
    Show answer

    A. Four seconds

Following too closely is a major factor in motorcycle crashes. Keep at least four seconds behind the vehicle ahead in ideal conditions, and more on slippery pavement, in heavy traffic or when you cannot see past the vehicle. Count from when its rear bumper passes a fixed marker.

  4. During a quick stop, your front wheel locks. What should you do?

    • A Keep the front brake locked until you stop
    • B Release the front brake, then reapply it firmly
    • C Let go of both brakes and coast to a stop
    • D Turn the handlebars to steer out of the skid
    Show answer

    B. Release the front brake, then reapply it firmly

If the front wheel locks during a quick stop, release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly while pressing down on the rear brake. This is different from a locked rear wheel on a good traction surface, which the handbook says to keep locked until you stop.
