    • C The left third, path 1
    • D Straddling the line between the two lanes

    A. The center of the lane, path 2

  2. How does a motorcycle usually feel if the front tire goes flat?

    • A You will hear a loud pop every time
    • B The engine loses power suddenly
    • C The back of the bike sways side to side
    • D The steering feels heavy
    Show answer

    D. The steering feels heavy

If the front tire goes flat, the steering will feel heavy; a rear flat makes the back of the bike jerk or sway. A front flat is especially dangerous because it affects steering, which you need for balance.

  3. On a dry road, is it safe to ride in the center of the lane where cars drip oil?

    • A Only if no other vehicles are on the road
    • B No; the center of the lane should always be avoided
    • C Only if you are riding under 20 mph
    • D Yes; the center strip usually has enough traction unless the road is wet
    Show answer

    D. Yes; the center strip usually has enough traction unless the road is wet

The oily strip in the center of the lane is usually no more than two feet wide, and unless the road is wet it gives enough traction to ride on safely. You can also ride just left or right of it. Avoid big oil buildups at busy intersections and toll booths.

    • D Speed up to reach the next exit quickly
    Show answer

    A. Hold the grips firmly, ease off the throttle and keep a straight course

If a tire goes flat, hold the grips firmly, ease off the throttle and keep a straight course. If you must brake, gradually use the brake on the tire that is not flat. When the bike slows, edge to the side, squeeze the clutch and stop.
