C. Signal, find a gap, match traffic speed and merge when safe
A speed-change lane lets you reach the speed of expressway traffic before merging. Signal, look for an opening, match the traffic speed and merge when it is safe.

If you miss an exit, go on to the next one. Backing up on an expressway is illegal and extremely dangerous at those speeds.

Traffic is heavy and slow, and one lane ahead is closed for construction. What does the Illinois handbook advise?
- A Stay in the closing lane and wait for other drivers to let you in
- B Use both lanes up to the merge point, then take turns merging
- C Drive on the shoulder to pass the line of cars
- D Move into the open lane as soon as you see the sign
Show answer
B. Use both lanes up to the merge point, then take turns merging
In dense, slow traffic, use both lanes to the lane-reduction point and merge there, taking turns. This is the 'zipper merge.' When traffic is light, merge into the open lane early.
