On a two-lane, two-way road, the center line is a single broken yellow line. What does it mean?

    • A Passing is not allowed in either direction
    • B Only traffic in the right lane may pass
    • C The center is reserved for left turns from both directions
    • D Passing with care is allowed in either direction
    Show answer

    D. Passing with care is allowed in either direction

A single broken yellow line separates traffic moving in opposite directions and allows passing with care in either direction. You still need a clear view and enough space to return safely.

The center line has a solid yellow line on your side and a broken yellow line on the other side. May you pass?

    • A No; passing is not allowed from the solid-line side
    • B Yes, if you can see far enough ahead
    • C Yes, but only to pass a slow-moving vehicle
    • D Yes, as long as you can finish the pass within 100 feet
    Show answer

    A. No; passing is not allowed from the solid-line side

With a solid line beside a broken line, careful passing is allowed for traffic on the broken-line side but not for traffic on the solid-line side. Look at the line closest to your lane to know what you may do.
