Sample traffic signals questions

  1. In Maryland, after a complete stop at a red light and when no sign prohibits it, which turn is allowed besides a right turn?

    • A A left turn from a two-way street onto a one-way street
    • B A left turn from any street, as long as no traffic is coming either way
    • C A U-turn when the intersection is completely clear
    • D A left turn from a one-way street onto another one-way street
    Show answer

    D. A left turn from a one-way street onto another one-way street

Unless a sign prohibits it, after a full stop at a steady red light you may turn right, or turn left from a one-way street onto another one-way street. You must still yield to pedestrians and all other traffic.

  2. The light turns yellow just as you reach the intersection, and you are too close to stop safely. What should you do?

    • A Carefully continue through the intersection
    • B Brake hard to stop in the intersection
    • C Speed up to beat the red light
    • D Stop past the crosswalk and then back up behind the line
    Show answer

    A. Carefully continue through the intersection

A steady yellow means the light is about to turn red. Stop if you can do so safely, but if you are too close to stop safely, carefully continue through the intersection.

  3. You reach an intersection where the traffic signal is dark because of a power failure. What does the Maryland manual require?

    • A Slow down and drive through without stopping if no one is coming
    • B Go if you are on the busier road
    • C Stop, yield to vehicles and pedestrians, and go when it is safe
    • D Treat it as a yield sign without stopping
    Show answer

    C. Stop, yield to vehicles and pedestrians, and go when it is safe

When a signal is not working you must stop at the stop line, or before the crosswalk or intersection if there is no line. Then yield to vehicles and pedestrians in the intersection and go only when it is safe, as you would at a stop sign.

  4. You are in a reversible lane and a steady yellow X appears over your lane. What should you do?

    • A Move out of the lane as soon as you safely can
    • B Stay in the lane; it is open to you
    • C Use the lane only for a left turn
    • D Stop immediately where you are
    Show answer

    A. Move out of the lane as soon as you safely can

Lane use signals control reversible lanes. A steady yellow X means move out of the lane as soon as you safely can, because the lane is about to close to your direction. A red X means never drive in that lane.
