Nebraska motorcycle rules to know
- A Nebraska learner's permit holder riding a motorcycle must be accompanied by a licensed motorcycle operator who is at least 21 and within visual contact. Because a motorcycle has no seat beside the rider, the supervisor rides separately but close enough to watch and coach you. Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles website
- The regular Nebraska learner's permit (LPD) has a minimum age of 15. You may apply up to 60 days early, but the permit cannot be issued until your 15th birthday or later. Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles website
- Nebraska's minimum age for a Class M license is 17, but anyone under 18 must first hold a Provisional Operator's Permit for at least 12 months and have fewer than three points in the previous 12 months. This keeps young riders in the provisional stage long enough to build a clean record. Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles website
- The Nebraska motorcycle written test has 25 questions and you need 80% to pass, so you can miss no more than five. A passed written test stays valid for six months, and the motorcycle test is offered only in English. Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles website
- Graduates of a Nebraska-approved course such as the MSF Basic RiderCourse can have both the written and drive tests waived if they apply within 24 months of finishing. Course graduates may also be eligible for lower insurance rates. Nebraska Motorcycle Operator Manual (Supplement to the Nebraska Driver's Manual), page 8
- Nebraska law says no person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent rows of vehicles. Lane splitting leaves you exposed to opening doors, sudden lane changes and drivers who do not expect a motorcycle beside them.
