Sample highways & freeways questions
You miss your exit on an interstate. What should you do?
- A Stop on the shoulder and wait for a gap to reverse
- B Continue to the next exit and leave there
- C Slow down and cross the median to turn around
- D Back up carefully on the shoulder
Show answer
B. Continue to the next exit and leave there
If you miss an exit, do not slow down, back up or try to turn around. Go on to the next exit and find a way back from there. Interstate traffic is too fast to handle unexpected moves.

How should you enter an interstate from an on-ramp?
- A Stop at the end of the ramp and wait for a large gap
- B Merge immediately and then speed up in the travel lane
- C Enter slowly so traffic on the interstate can see you
- D Use the acceleration lane to match traffic speed, then merge
Show answer
D. Use the acceleration lane to match traffic speed, then merge
Use the acceleration lane to bring your speed up to match the traffic, then merge safely into a gap. Merging at a much lower speed than traffic is a common cause of crashes.
You realize you have entered an interstate going the wrong direction. What should you do first?
- A Pull over to the right shoulder and stop
- B Make a U-turn right away in the travel lanes
- C Keep driving to the next exit and leave there
- D Flash your headlights and drive in the left lane
Show answer
A. Pull over to the right shoulder and stop
If you enter an interstate the wrong way, pull over to the right shoulder and stop. When the way is clear, turn around and head the proper direction. Watch for DO NOT ENTER signs to avoid this error.
You reach a freeway ramp meter, and its signal is dark, showing neither red nor green. What should you do?
- A Stop and wait until the signal shows green
- B Wait for a highway worker to wave you on
- C Proceed without stopping and merge as normal
- D Treat it as a flashing red light and come to a full stop first
Show answer
C. Proceed without stopping and merge as normal
A ramp meter controls traffic entering a freeway. On red, stop; on green, proceed and merge. When it is dark, you may proceed without stopping and merge or yield as conditions allow.
