On a two-lane road, there is a solid yellow line on your side of the center line and a broken yellow line on the other side. What does this mean for you?
- A You may pass when it is safe
- B You must not pass
- C You may pass only during daylight
- D You may pass slow trucks only
Show answer
B. You must not pass
Yellow lines separate traffic going in opposite directions. If the solid yellow line is on your side, you must not pass; drivers with the broken line on their side may pass when it is safe. These zones mark places where you cannot see far enough ahead.

A lane in the middle of the road has a solid yellow line nearest each through lane and a broken yellow line inside it. How may you use this lane?
- A Only to make a left turn
- B To pass slower vehicles
- C As an extra through lane at rush hour
- D Only for traffic going one way
Show answer
A. Only to make a left turn
This is a center left-turn lane. Drivers from either direction use it only to make left turns. Never use it to pass or to travel along the road, because oncoming drivers may be turning into the same space.
Two lanes of traffic going the same direction are separated by a solid white line. What does the line tell you?
- A Change lanes only to pass
- B Change lanes freely when clear
- C The lanes go in opposite directions
- D Do not change lanes
Show answer
D. Do not change lanes
White lines separate lanes moving in the same direction. A broken white line lets you change lanes when it is safe, but a solid white line between lanes means do not change lanes. Solid white lines are often used near intersections and ramps.
Yellow lines on the road separate lanes of traffic moving in which way?
- A In the same direction
- B Toward a parking area
- C In opposite directions
- D Only toward an exit
Show answer
C. In opposite directions
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and white lines separate lanes moving in the same direction. Seeing yellow on your left tells you oncoming traffic is on the other side.
