Sample traffic signals questions
You come to an intersection where the traffic light is flashing red in your direction. What must you do?
- A Slow down and go through with caution
- B Stop only if cross traffic is present
- C Wait until the light turns steady green
- D Stop completely, then go when it is safe
Show answer
D. Stop completely, then go when it is safe
A flashing red light means the same thing as a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, yield to other traffic and pedestrians, then go when it is safe. Signals that are out of order are often set to flash and follow the same rule.
You are stopped at a steady red light on a one-way street, waiting to turn left onto another one-way street. No sign prohibits turns on red. What may you do?
- A Wait for the green light, because left turns on red are never allowed
- B Turn left after stopping and yielding to traffic and pedestrians
- C Turn left without stopping if no traffic is coming
- D Turn left only if a green arrow appears

B. Turn left after stopping and yielding to traffic and pedestrians
In West Virginia you may turn right on red where two-way streets meet, and turn left on red from a one-way street onto another one-way street. Either turn requires a full stop and yielding to all traffic and pedestrians, and it is not allowed where a sign prohibits it.
You are driving in a lane under a lane-use signal that shows a steady yellow X. What does it mean?
- A You may use the lane only to turn left
- B The lane is closed to all traffic right now
- C The lane is about to close or reverse, so move out of it
- D The lane is open and you may keep driving in it
Show answer
C. The lane is about to close or reverse, so move out of it
Lane-use signals hang over lanes whose direction changes during the day. A yellow X warns that the lane is about to close or reverse direction, so move out of it as soon as you safely can. A red X means do not use the lane at all.
You want to turn right at a red light and no cross traffic is coming. What must you do first?
- A Slow down and roll through
- B Honk and then proceed
- C Come to a complete stop
- D Flash your headlights and go
Show answer
C. Come to a complete stop
You must come to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign, even when turning right and no traffic is present. Pressure from drivers behind you is no excuse.
