Sample traffic signals questions
In Idaho, what must you do at a flashing red traffic light?
- A Slow down and go through without stopping
- B Treat it the same as a stop sign
- C Stop only if cross traffic is present
- D Wait until the light turns steady green
Show answer
B. Treat it the same as a stop sign
A flashing red light means the same thing as a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, yield to cross traffic and pedestrians, and proceed when it is safe.

You are stopped at a steady red arrow pointing right. When may you turn right?
- A After stopping and yielding, like a red ball
- B Immediately, as long as no pedestrians or cars are present
- C Only after a green or yellow light allows the movement
- D Only if a sign says right turn on red permitted
Show answer
C. Only after a green or yellow light allows the movement
While a steady red arrow is showing, no turn is permitted in the arrow's direction until a green or yellow light allows it. This is stricter than a red ball, where a right turn after stopping is normally allowed.

You are in a left-turn lane facing a flashing yellow arrow. What may you do?
- A Turn left freely, because oncoming traffic must stop
- B Stop and wait for a solid green arrow
- C Prepare to stop because the arrow is turning red

Show answer
D. Turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
A flashing yellow arrow allows a turn, but only after you yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Wait for a safe gap.

You reach an intersection where the traffic signals are dark because of a power outage. What should you do?
- A Treat the intersection as a four-way stop
- B Slow down and proceed if the way looks clear
- C Let the busier road keep going without stopping
- D Turn on hazard lights and drive straight through
Show answer
A. Treat the intersection as a four-way stop
When a traffic signal is not working, every driver must treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Stop, then go in turn, with the first to arrive going first.
