Louisiana motorcycle rules to know
- Louisiana lists an approved safety helmet as the first mandatory requirement for all riders. Head and neck injuries cause most serious and fatal motorcycle injuries, and a securely fastened quality helmet is the single best way to survive a crash. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 60
- R.S. 32:190.1 requires an approved eye protective device unless the motorcycle has a windshield high enough to give adequate eye protection. Even so, the safety section of the manual points out that most windshields do not really protect your eyes from wind, so goggles or a face shield remain the safer choice. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 60
- R.S. 32:191 says a person may ride a motorcycle only while sitting astride the seat, facing forward, with not more than one leg on each side. Sitting this way keeps the weight centered and balanced, so the operator can keep control. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 61
- Louisiana requires you to carry your basic operator's license with your motorcycle endorsement on your person whenever you ride. The endorsement is what shows an officer you passed the motorcycle tests and are licensed to operate a motorcycle. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 60
- Louisiana requires proof of current liability insurance, or other approved security, to be kept in the motorcycle at all times. Keeping it with the motorcycle means you can show it at any traffic stop or crash scene. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 60
- R.S. 32:191.1 forbids operating a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles; only police on duty are exempt. Riding between cars leaves you exposed to opening doors, sudden lane changes and drivers who never expect you there. Motorcycle Operator Manual, page 61
