Sample questions
Many motorcyclists use which part of the lane as their default lane position?
- A The right third, near the curb or shoulder
- B Directly on the lane line between two lanes
- C The left third, in the left tire track of cars
- D Exactly on the center line of the lane, over the oil strip
Show answer
C. The left third, in the left tire track of cars
Many riders treat the left third of the lane, the left tire track of cars, as their default position, then adjust as conditions change. No part of the lane must always be avoided; the goal is to be seen and keep a space cushion.
You cannot avoid riding over a small obstacle in the road. What should you do just before contact?
- A Lean the motorcycle to cross at an angle
- B Sit down firmly on the seat to keep your weight low and centered
- C Apply the front brake hard
- D Roll on the throttle slightly to lighten the front end
Show answer
D. Roll on the throttle slightly to lighten the front end
If you must ride over an obstacle, slow down as much as possible, make sure the motorcycle is straight, rise slightly off the seat with your weight on the footrests, and roll on the throttle slightly just before contact. Lightening the front end helps the front wheel climb over the object.
How much of your total stopping power can the front brake provide?
- A At least 70%
- B About half, the same as the rear brake
- C About one-third
- D About 60%
Show answer
A. At least 70%
The front brake is the more powerful brake and can provide at least 70% of your total stopping power, because weight shifts forward onto the front tire when you brake. Use both brakes every time you slow or stop so the habit is there in an emergency.
Under Louisiana law, what is the minimum age for a child to ride as a motorcycle passenger?
- A 8 years old, with no helmet requirement
- B 12 years old, unless a parent or guardian is the operator
- C 3 years old, if seated in front of the rider
- D 5 years old, properly seated and wearing a helmet
Show answer
D. 5 years old, properly seated and wearing a helmet
R.S. 32:191 bans carrying a child who still needs a child safety seat, and allows a child at least 5 years old to ride only when properly seated and wearing a safety helmet. The manual adds that children should sit immediately behind the rider, never in front.
