Sample questions

  1. Under Louisiana law, how must a person sit while riding on a motorcycle?

    • A Sideways, with both legs on one side, if holding on to the operator
    • B Facing backward, so a passenger can watch traffic behind
    • C Astride the seat, facing forward, with one leg on each side
    • D In any position, as long as both feet are on footrests
    Show answer

    C. Astride the seat, facing forward, with one leg on each side

R.S. 32:191 says a person may ride a motorcycle only while sitting astride the seat, facing forward, with not more than one leg on each side. Sitting this way keeps the weight centered and balanced, so the operator can keep control.

  2. Which situation is described as one of the biggest dangers to motorcyclists at intersections?

    • A A car stopped behind you at a red light
    • B A pedestrian waiting on the far corner
    • C A truck traveling the same way two lanes over
    • D A car turning left in front of you
    Show answer

    D. A car turning left in front of you

Over one-half of motorcycle/car crashes are caused by drivers entering a rider's right-of-way. Cars that turn left in front of you, including from the lane on your right, and cars pulling out of side streets are the biggest dangers. Use SEE at every intersection.

  3. During your pre-ride T-CLOCS check, what should the throttle do when you release it?

    • A Snap back to the fully closed position
    • B Stay where you left it, like cruise control
    • C Return to about one-quarter open
    • D Return slowly over a few seconds
    Show answer

    A. Snap back to the fully closed position

Under the C for Controls in T-CLOCS, make sure the clutch and throttle operate smoothly and that the throttle snaps back to fully closed when released. A throttle that sticks can carry you into a hazard you are trying to stop for.

  4. Under Louisiana law, when may you operate a motorcycle without wearing an approved eye protective device?

    • A When you are riding below 35 mph on city streets
    • B When a tall enough windshield gives adequate eye protection
    • C When you are riding during daylight in clear weather
    • D When you are wearing ordinary prescription eyeglasses
    Show answer

    B. When a tall enough windshield gives adequate eye protection

R.S. 32:190.1 requires an approved eye protective device unless the motorcycle has a windshield high enough to give adequate eye protection. Even so, the safety section of the manual points out that most windshields do not really protect your eyes from wind, so goggles or a face shield remain the safer choice.
