Turn sign
A sharp turn to the right ahead. Slow down before you reach it.
MUTCD designation W1-1R. See the federal MUTCD, page 194.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
You see this sign on a rural road. What does it warn about?
- A A sharp right turn that needs a much slower speed
- B A gentle curve to the right that you can take at normal speed
- C A side road joining from the right
- D A lane that must turn right ahead
Show answer
A. A sharp right turn that needs a much slower speed
Yellow diamonds warn of conditions you might not see in time. A right-angle arrow means a turn sharp enough that its advised speed is 30 mph or less, while a smoothly bending arrow means a gentler curve. Slow down before the turn, not in it.
