Warning signs

Reverse turn sign

A sharp turn to the right, then to the left.

MUTCD designation W1-3R. See the federal MUTCD, page 194.

How to read signs like this

Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

What road shape does this sign warn about?

    • A Two sharp turns close together, first right and then left
    • B A series of three or more curves
    • C A gentle bend to the right followed by a gentle bend to the left
    • D A road that turns right at a T-junction
    Show answer

    A. Two sharp turns close together, first right and then left

The squared corners on this arrow mean turns, which are sharper than curves. Two of them in opposite directions mean a reverse turn, used when the turns are less than 600 feet apart. Slow down before the first turn, because the second one comes right after it.
