Winding road sign
A series of curves ahead. Slow down and stay in your lane.
MUTCD designation W1-5R. See the federal MUTCD, page 194.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
What does this sign tell you about the road ahead?
- A A series of three or more curves close together
- B Slippery pavement when the road is wet
- C Two sharp right-angle turns, first right and then left
- D A lane that shifts to the right
Show answer
A. A series of three or more curves close together
A wavy arrow with several bends means a winding road. It replaces a string of separate curve signs when three or more bends come close together. Keep your speed down for the whole stretch, which may also be marked with a distance plaque.
