Double arrow sign
An obstruction in the road ahead; traffic may pass on either side.
MUTCD designation W12-1. See the federal MUTCD, page 8.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
This yellow sign is mounted on a concrete island in the road. What does it tell you?
- A Two-way traffic is ahead on this road
- B Keep to the right of the island, because the left side is closed
- C Traffic may pass on either side of the island
- D The divided highway ends just ahead
Show answer
C. Traffic may pass on either side of the island
This yellow diamond shows two arrows angling apart around a point. It is mounted on an island, pier or gore where traffic may legally pass on either side. Choose the side that matches where you want to go.
