Advisory speed plaque sign

Warning signs

Advisory speed plaque sign

Mounted under a warning sign: the recommended safe speed for the curve or hazard.

MUTCD designation W13-1P. See the federal MUTCD, page 9.

How to read signs like this

Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

This yellow plaque is mounted below a warning sign. What does it tell you?

    • A The highest legal speed for the whole road
    • B The lowest speed allowed on the highway
    • C The speed limit after the next intersection
    • D The suggested safe speed for the hazard shown above it
    Show answer

    D. The suggested safe speed for the hazard shown above it

Yellow means warning, so this number is advice, not a legal limit. It shows the speed found safe for the curve or hazard on the sign above in good conditions. Drive slower when it is wet, dark or icy.
