No passing zone sign
A pennant on the left side of the road marking the start of a no-passing zone.
MUTCD designation W14-3. See the federal MUTCD, page 9.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
This sign is posted on the left side of a two-lane road. What does it mean?
- A Do not enter this road from here
- B Yield to traffic coming from the left
- C You are entering a zone where passing is not allowed
- D A passing lane begins just ahead on your side of the road
Show answer
C. You are entering a zone where passing is not allowed
The pennant shape is used only for this sign, so you can recognize it at a glance. It is posted on the left side of the road, where a driver about to pass will see it. It marks the start of a no-passing zone that is also shown by pavement markings.
