Warning signs

Crossing location arrow sign

A downward arrow under a crossing sign marks the exact location of the crossing.

MUTCD designation W16-7P.

How to read signs like this

Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.

This small plaque is mounted below a pedestrian, bicycle or school warning sign. What does it mean?

    • A The crossing is a short distance ahead
    • B Traffic must detour in the arrow's direction
    • C The crossing is right here, where the arrow points
    • D The lane shifts toward the arrow
    Show answer

    C. The crossing is right here, where the arrow points

The diagonal arrow pointing down at the road marks the exact crossing location. Signs with AHEAD or a distance plaque come before the crossing, and this one is at it. Be ready to stop right here for anyone crossing.
