Oncoming traffic has extended green sign
Oncoming traffic may still have a green light after yours turns red. Do not assume they will stop.
MUTCD designation W25-1.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
You are waiting to turn left on a solid green light and see this sign. What does it warn?
- A Oncoming cars may keep a green after yours turns yellow
- B Oncoming cars must stop when your light turns yellow
- C Your own green light will last longer than usual at this signal
- D Left turns are allowed only on a green arrow
Show answer
A. Oncoming cars may keep a green after yours turns yellow
Normally, when your light turns yellow, the oncoming light does too, so you can finish your turn. Here the oncoming traffic keeps its green, so you cannot assume a gap will open. Turn only when there is a safe gap, and never into oncoming cars.
