Stop ahead sign
A stop sign is ahead, possibly hidden by a curve or hill. Prepare to stop.
MUTCD designation W3-1. See the federal MUTCD, page 9.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
This sign is posted before a hill. What does it tell you?
- A Stop here, then continue when it is clear
- B A traffic signal is around the next bend
- C Yield to traffic at the junction ahead, stopping if needed
- D A stop sign is ahead that you cannot see yet
Show answer
D. A stop sign is ahead that you cannot see yet
A red octagon inside a yellow diamond warns that a stop sign is coming. These advance signs are required when the stop sign is hidden by a hill, curve or other object. Begin slowing so you can stop smoothly.
