Reduced speed limit ahead sign

MUTCD designation W3-5. See the federal MUTCD, page 9.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
What does this sign tell drivers to prepare for?
- A The speed limit you are under is ending
- B Police radar or cameras are checking your speed on this road
- C This is a suggested speed for a curve
- D A lower speed limit starts a short distance ahead
Show answer
D. A lower speed limit starts a short distance ahead
This yellow sign gives advance notice of a lower speed limit, usually when the drop is more than 10 mph. The new limit begins at the white speed limit sign that follows. Start slowing now so you reach the new limit by that sign.
