Merge sign
Two lanes of traffic join ahead. Adjust your speed and let traffic merge smoothly.
MUTCD designation W4-1. See the federal MUTCD, page 9.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
You are driving on a highway and see this sign. What does it warn about?
- A Your own lane ends ahead, so you must move over
- B Traffic ahead will travel in both directions
- C Vehicles from another road will merge into your lane ahead
- D The joining road gets its own added lane, so no merge is needed
Show answer
C. Vehicles from another road will merge into your lane ahead
The straight arrow stands for your road and the curved line joining it stands for the entering road. The sign warns that the two roads come together into one lane ahead, so expect vehicles to merge into your lane. It is not used where the entering road gets its own added lane.
