Lane ends sign
The lane ends ahead. Traffic in that lane must merge into the next lane.
MUTCD designation W4-2. See the federal MUTCD, page 223.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
What change in the road does this sign warn about?
- A Traffic from a ramp merges onto your road
- B A new lane is added for traffic entering from a ramp
- C The number of lanes drops, so one lane must merge
- D The pavement narrows on a two-lane road
Show answer
C. The number of lanes drops, so one lane must merge
This symbol shows one lane line bending into the other, meaning the number of lanes in your direction is dropping. Drivers in the ending lane must find a gap and merge into the lane that continues. Adjust your speed early so the merge is smooth.
