Added lane sign

Warning signs

Added lane sign

Another lane joins the road ahead and continues as its own lane, so traffic does not have to merge.

MUTCD designation W4-3. See the federal MUTCD, page 223.

How to read signs like this

Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

What does this sign tell drivers on the main road?

    • A Entering traffic will merge into your lane, so make room for it
    • B Your lane will end and must merge left
    • C Traffic ahead travels in both directions
    • D Entering traffic gets its own lane, so no merge is needed
    Show answer

    D. Entering traffic gets its own lane, so no merge is needed

This sign shows two arrows running side by side, meaning the joining road continues as an added lane. Unlike a merge, neither stream has to squeeze into the other. Still, watch for drivers changing lanes after the roads join.
